1. Upside-Down Peri Bottle
The upside-down peri bottle was a lifesaver after childbirth. It was so easy to use, even when I was in pain, with minimal movement required. The place you decide to have your baby should provide a peri bottle, however, the hospital bottles just weren’t practical for me. The angle on the upside-down peri bottles made it a lot simpler to use, while giving a better clean. These are great for moms who deliver both vaginally and via C-section since you can not be twisting during this time.
Dermoplast is one of the most essential items needed after giving birth. This is the best product that provides so much comfort and relief from childbirth pains. After trying many other products on the market for perineal pain relief, I have found that Dermoplast by far works the best. The place you decide to deliver at should provide you with some, but I always ended up needing more. Always ask your doctor before using any medicated products.
Maxi Pad ice packs provide so much relief especially the first couple days after giving birth. I always found that sleeping with a maxi pad ice pack on helped so much with my pain. There are disposable ice packs and reusable ice packs. Personally, I really liked the Lansinoh Hot and Cold Postpartum Therapy Packs because they are reusable with disposable covers. In addition, they can be used as hot pads as well for cramps that come during postpartum and even menstruation. Once again, the place you decide to deliver at should give you a few ice packs.
I always found that wearing Always disposable underwear were a lot more comfortable than wearing underwear and a pad. Personally, I liked the Always Discreet brand of disposable underwear more than the hospital provided ones, however, they both get the job done. In the first few days, you may need to add a pad to your disposable underwear for extra protection.
Tucks are super helpful to line your pad with. They are soaked with witch hazel which gives a cooling sensation that helps relieve a lot of the pain. These are also nice to have on hand during postpartum just in case you do get hemorrhoids during pregnancy and childbirth. Always ask your doctor before using any medicated products.
Taking a stool softener after giving birth is usually a good idea especially if you get medication during your birth. Since you may have stitches you want to make sure you do not rip them open. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication.
If you are choosing to breastfeed your baby, these hot/cold packs are a lifesaver! When you use them cold, they can help relieve discomfort in the first week or so when you may have sore nipples. I would put these packs on before and after my baby ate and it helped my pain so much. When you use them hot, they can help relieve pain from clogged duct, mastitis, or sore breasts. Always consult your doctor if you think you may be getting mastitis as it may require treatment. Remember mama, if you have pain from breastfeeding, you may need to consult a lactation consultant. However, sometimes you will be sore for the first week, but it is only temporary and will get easier.
Another one for breastfeeding mamas, Fridamom Cracked Nipple Saline Spray and No-Mess Nipple Balm are extremely useful in relieving sore nipple pain. They are safe for the baby and they provide a cooling sensation that helps give almost instant temporary relief.
It is really important to have some comfortable easy on and off leggings or shorts to wear during your fourth trimester. I recommend getting a pair of maternity leggings to wearing home from the hospital and for the next few weeks after giving birth because it will take some time for your stomach to go back down. You want something comfortable as you navigate your postpartum journey.
A belly band is going to be very important in helping your organs and uterus go back to normal position. It will also help with some of the discomfort in your stomach after giving birth. This is an important postpartum item for both natural delivery and cesarean delivery.
In conclusion, every woman is going to have a different postpartum experience and require different items after. Each time you have a baby, you can have a different postpartum experience or need different items for different lengths of time. I highly recommend getting a good water bottle that you can carry with you because you will need lots and lots of water. For mamas that are deciding to breastfeed, you will need plenty of water every day. Linked below are some of my personal favorite water bottles.
I wish you the best of luck in this new stage of your life. You got this, mama!
